Thus far I have completely failed to introduce the two people responsible for getting us from Cape Town to Durban. They are the Obi Wan and Yoda to our Luke and Leia Skywalker. Byron and Bevon, our two mums, are quite possibly the greatest pairing in the history of trip leaders. Bevon wakes up before sunrise and is South Africa’s version of David Attinburough, always sharing fun facts about our surroundings. Byron is more of a nocturnal fellow, escorting us on nights out to ensure that we all make it back in one piece. Both of them can shred in the water and are all-around stand up guys.
Today was especially special. It was Byron’s birthday.
The crew got him a present in the form of a big bottle of Jack Daniels (wrapped in tinfoil). The night also included vodka watermelon, vuvuzelas, fish bowls and copious amounts of other beverages. We also managed to acquire a plethora of hats for our group. It was a win on all fronts. As an aside, I have come to one realize one universal truth so far. No matter where you are in the world, on your birthday, your friends will always try to get you embarrassingly drunk.
