Shark Alarm

Today I learned a little about ocean safety, mainly an organization called Sharkspotters. Our instructors told us not to worry since Cape Town has an amazing system for shark protection. Here’s the jist of it:

There is a large hill overlooking the beach where we surf.

Someone sits on top of the hill and stares in the ocean.

If that person sees a shark they press a button which triggers a siren, known as the shark alarm.

Everyone gets the hell out of the water as fast as they can.

Another shark spotter at beach level raises a white flag with a shark on it.

This indicates that there has been a shark spotting within the last 2 hours.

Then everyone waits 20 minutes, the white flag gets replaced with a red flag and we go back into the sea.

Okay…
